WAS JESUS?

Was Jesus ever recorded in Scripture

To be one on one with individuals? The ANSWER is ABSOLUTELY i.e. one well known occasion was the woman at the well.

QUESTION: Was there then "two or three" gathered together at that time at the well? Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Jesus was there in person i.e in His character, but the WOMAN was not gathered at the well in the name of or character of Jesus, yet the verse still applies to this event.

Let's see!

  • There was Jesus!
  • The Samaritan Woman which makes (two) and there was the Holy Spirit which made three thus (two or three). Gathered at the well, but ONLY one was there at the time in the character i.e in the name of Jesus, that was Jesus Himself.

The verse above has always been used and misunderstood to mean that where (two or three "believers" are gathered together, but that IS NOT was the verse means. But it can apply under that circumstance it's NOT exclusive to believers. In other words, the verse has both a temporal and a spiritual application and IS NOT restricted to believers alone but encompasses unbelievers as well.

QUESTION: Was the Samaritan woman at the well a "believer"? as far as Jesus' teachings? NO! She was NOT a believer in Jesus, she didn't even know Him or His name, she was a follower of Jacob which also made her an Israelite and a Jew even though she was from Samaria.]

My emphasis in brackets [ ] within the verses interchange between Jesus and the Woman at the well.

Joh 4:7-26 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. [This was a command NOT a question.] (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat. [food NOT flesh meat) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, [Jesus] How is it that thou, [YOU] being a Jew, askest drink of me, [She saw the "command of Jesus" as a question] which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou [YOU] knewest the gift of God, [Of Which I AM that gift] and who it is [The Savior of the World] that saith [Speaks] to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, [She still didn't know His name she only knew Him to be a Jew and addressed His as Sir] thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? [Where are you going to get that living water, you have NO container and I don't see any rope] Art thou greater than our father Jacob, [NOTICE: That when she said "our father Jacob" she identified herself as an Israelite and didn't even know it.] which gave us [Israelites] the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this [Earthly] water shall thirst again: [When Thirst comes upon you again] But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him [The Water of LIFE called the truth] shall never [Spiritually] thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.NOTICE: Jesus was speaking to a "woman" here, why didn't He use the word "her" when speaking to her?

Because the word "him" eludes to the first man Created who was Adam in which his name means "MANKIND" corporate humanity. Jesus was speaking here in the spiritual NOT in the temporal understanding and the word "him" encompassed the entire world of humanity.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, [Now she makes a demand she doesn't say "Can I have this water or please give me this water you speak of BOTH of which would have been a question to Jesus] that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. [She did NOT hear Jesus say that it was "living water" a very different kind of water than she was drawing from the well].

NOW COMES THE SINCERITY TEST TO THE WOMAN. JESUS WANTED TO SEE JUST HOW HONEST THIS WOMAN WOULD BE WITH HIM AND HERSELF. DID HE KNOW BEFORE HE ASKED THE FOLLOWING question the answer to the question? Of course, He did, so why did He ask it? Jesus wanted the woman to see her own SIN in order that she would repent. So he brought it forth from her (own mouth) with the question.

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: [She told the truth] For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: [She was shacking -up with a man] in that saidst thou truly. [Jesus made her aware of her SIN within her own mind] The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye [NOT Jesus but the Jews] say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we [The Jews] know what we worship: [Why did Jesus say "what" and not "in whom" we worship?] for salvation is of [Came Through] the Jews.

Because the "what" is the TRUTH and involved HIMSELF, Jesus didn't want the woman to see Him as the MESSIAH until she acknowledged to Him that she was looking for HIM. Jesus wanted her to see Him as the TRUTH, the MESSIAH. Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers [NOTICE: Jesus said when the "true worshipers" implying that there would be many FALSE worshipers] shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. [BOTH are necessary for TRUE WORSHIP, the spirit i.e. the MIND and that MIND must be fortified and trained in the TRUTH] The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. NOTICE: The "am" in John 14:6 is the same "am" in Joh 4:26. Jesus wanted the woman to see Him as such.

What did the woman then do?

This conversation consisted of TWO or THREE, in this case TWO but the HOLY SPIRIT was also present within the woman working on her at the same time, so it was actually THREE in accordance to what Jesus spoke in Mat 18:20 For where two (HIMSELF and the WOMAN) or three [INCLUDING the HOLY SPIRITS PRESENCE] are gathered together in my name, [IN MY CHARACTER] there am I in the midst of them.

Joh 4:28,29 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

She was CONVINCED and that was Jesus' goal for that ONE woman knowing that her witness would bring out all the cities elders as well.

The woman was NOT a believer when she first met Jesus at the well, so the passage in Mat 18:20 applies to ALL both believers and non-nelievers alike. Only the arrogant selfish filled with pride, carnal Christian will use this verse to justify their meeting together.
